Lower Back and Neck Pain

Lower back pain and neck pain are significant problems in today’s world. So much so that it’s highly likely that you have had 1 more episodes of lower back or neck pain in the last year.

Lower back pain will effect over 80% of the population. Research suggests that 7.5% of the world’s population is affected by lower back pain and up to 10% if you include pain in other areas of the back or neck. In the vast majority of cases of back and neck pain, the underlying cause is not something considered critical or life threatening such as cancer, infection or a fracture. Rather, the cause is generally related to a biomechanical problem in the joints of the spine, a soft tissue strain or chronic inflammation due to a sedentary lifestyle and/or inflammatory diet.

There are many factors in your life that can lead to an episode of back and neck pain, but here are the most common:

  • Lifting injuries
  • Slips and falls
  • Car accidents
  • Sports injuries
  • Repetitive work duties
  • Long term poor posture
  • Obesity

Greater than 5% of all the people suffering with lower back and neck pain end up with chronic pain that is unresolved. Unfortunately, this high tendency for chronic pain developing is a major factor in the crushing opioid addiction crisis. For years, traditional medical care has chosen to treat the pain with prescription drugs rather than addressing the root causes of the pain. When that has not worked, surgery has been the next answer. With a lower than 40% success rate for spine surgeries, it’s becoming clear that traditional medicine doesn’t have the solution for lower back and neck pain.

In the last 2 years, several studies have reported that chiropractic care for lower back and neck pain is not only more effective than traditional medical care, it is less expensive. Another study from 2021 showed that early intervention with chiropractic care for those suffering with lower back pain resulted in nearly zero use of opioid medications.  This study also showed that the closer to onset of pain that treatment started, the better the results and showed decreased likelihood of chronic pain.
